Valve Cover Gasket
When the engine is running, oil constantly splashes out from the mechanism that opens the valves. The oil droplets richochet everywhere. The job of the valve cover is to contain the oil inside the engine. The valve cover gasket fits between the bottom of the valve cover and the top of the cylinder head, preventing oil from splashing out through the joint.
Being near the top of the engine, the valve cover gaskets have to fight a lot of heat. On some vehicles, the valve cover gasket suffers from an inadequate design and they all fail. On others, it's just plain wear-and-tear caused by the metal expanding as the engine warms, and contracting as the engine cools. The cost of replacing a valve cover gasket varies widly. On some vehicles, it's just a matter of unbolting the cover and replacing the gasket. It the worse of cases, some of the engine has to be disassembled just to get to it so the expense of unnecessary valve cover gasket replacement should be avoided.
