Timing Belt

You probably have seen a vidio of how and engine works.  The pistons go up then down and the valve which are mounted above the pistons go down then up.  The crankshaft makes the pistions go up and down.  The camshaft makes the valves to down and up.  The Timing belt is a toothed rubber belt that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and keeps everything coordinated so that the pistons and valves don't collide.

Not all engines have timing belt.  Some designs use timing chains or gears gears to accomplish the coordination function. Engines with timing belts are classified into two categories: inteference and non-interference.

Eventually timing belts break.  When that happes in a non-interference engine, the engine simply stops working and you're stuck by the side of the road.  However, if the engine is of the interference type, the timing belt must be replaced on schedule because simply cannot be allowed to break, for, when it does, the pistions slam into the valves causing damage that can run into the thousands!
